  • May 1, 2002: One of the two adolescent red-tailed hawks that were gently retrieved when their nest was blown to the ground during a high wind storm. They were a few weeks away from being able to fly on their own, so they were taken to Ojai Raptor Center where they were nurtured, taught how to hunt, then released into the wild. For days on end following the incident the adults hung around the tree, crying and looking for their babies. I wish I could have been able to tell them their babies were safe and in excellent care. www.ojairaptorcenter.org

  • May 14, 2003: This is a 2 month old Redtail hawk after it fell from its nest when it tried to fledge prematurely. We were able to gently retrieve it and place it back up on a high branch where it was successful in getting back up to the nest. It was able to fly one to two weeks later.

  • May 27, 2005: Neighbor Dave gently retrieves the adolescent red-tailed hawk from the ground after it tries to fledge but is still about one to two weeks away from being able to fly on its own. We placed it on a high branch in the tree where it was able to jump back up to the nest and successfully fledged a few weeks later.

  • April 23, three hatchlings! Sadly, on the evening of April 25 one of the hatchlings was found dead at the bottom of the tree. Pushed out of the nest, most likely. The weaker one perhaps? Survival of the fittest.
